This year, the popular Samsung Galaxy A line of smartphones has been noticeably updated has acquired flagship chips, and now does not seem to be such overprice as before. We already wrote about the Galaxy A52 ( review ), and today we will talk about the Galaxy A72 - a big smartphone with a small heart.

Appearance and equipment

The Samsung Galaxy A72 ships with a USB-C to USB-C cable, 25W compact power adapter, SIM eject tool, and documentation. The manufacturer was not generous with the cover and other amenities, and the USB-C cable is, of course, very modern, but it may not be practical when connecting a smartphone to a PC.

The front surface is protected by fifth-generation Corning Gorilla Glass, the frame is made of glossy plastic, and the back is made of matte. In the Russian market, the smartphone is available in black, lavender and blue colors. I got lavender: it looks unusual, but calm. The photo block, as in the case of the Galaxy A52 ( review ), seems to be squeezed out in the lid. Despite the lack of premium materials, the device is officially certified according to the IP67 dust and moisture protection standard, which not everyone can boast of.

Multimedia and conversational speakers form a stereo pair. The sound quality, though not top-notch, is much more interesting than most mono solutions. The hybrid SIM tray is located on the top end. You can use either two nanoSIM cards, or one nanoSIM and one microSD memory card (up to 1 TB).

The Galaxy A72 has a 6.7" Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1800 pixels and a refresh rate of 90Hz. The display is really big, overkill for many. There is always the danger of accidental clicks when reaching for the opposite side of the screen.

The settings offer a range of tools for customizing displayed colors, display refresh rate, AoD, and more. What the settings don't offer is manual control of DC-dimming flicker reduction technology.

Software

The smartphone runs on Android 11 in One UI 3.1 shell. Most of the time the system is stable, but problems do happen. So, when unlocking the smartphone with a fingerprint, the animation stably slows down, and during the shooting, there was a crash from the “Camera” once. There is no big trouble from this, but the lack of advertising and a pleasant appearance are definitely pleasing.

Among the unique chips here is support for the Edge quick access panel, Samsung Pay (without imitation of a magnetic tape) and support for device security using the Knox hardware chip. The latter will be especially appreciated by active users of the “protected folder”.

cameras

The Galaxy A72 main camera unit includes four cameras: a 64-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 5-megapixel macro module. All cameras are working, they didn’t install completely stupid 2 megapixel plugs and other depth sensors.

The main camera slot is occupied by a Sony IMX682 sensor with a resolution of 64 (→16) MP, f/1.8 aperture and phase detection autofocus. We have already seen it in the same Galaxy M51 ( review ), and then it showed its good side. What is this time? This time it was flavored with optical stabilization!

In the standard mode, electronic algorithms and various improvers are fully worked out. The final photos bear the imprint of Samsung's corporate identity - sharp and saturated colors. As a result, the picture is not always realistic, but almost always bright and attractive.

Performance and Benchmarks

The heart of the device is the Snapdragon 720G chipset with the Adreno 618 graphics chip. In our case, it is echoed by 6 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128 GB of permanent UFS 2.1 format. If there had been a more productive solution, maybe electronic stabilization would have worked when shooting 4K @ 30fps, and there would have been no twitching in the interface.

Launching demanding applications is best done through the Game Launcher. It works out optimization algorithms and other magic. The throttling test without the launcher and with the launcher showed similar graphs, but the difference in the average score was 10k (132 vs 142). In this path, it is interesting that the Samsung A52 in the same test showed a much more stable picture and gave an average result of as much as 187 thousand.

The exact answer to the question "Why so?" I don't, but I did find something. You can find analyzes of both smartphones on the network, and as it turned out, the A52 is equipped with a copper tube for heat dissipation (located under the battery), while the A72 is devoid of such a detail. Perhaps that's the point.

conclusions

Samsung Galaxy A72 is a good option for fans of the brand with a craving for large diagonals. For not the most modest ≈38,000 rubles, the smartphone offers a large (even unnecessarily for some) AMOLED display with increased hertz, nice appearance, good autonomy, stereo sound, dust and moisture protection and a smart set of cameras with optical stabilization. If these are the things you are interested in when buying a smartphone, click on the big red button below and do not know the troubles.

If not, I have a couple of ideas for you. First, take a look at the Samsung A52 ( review ). With a difference of almost a quarter of the price, it offers almost everything the same, minus the telephoto and a couple of tenths of an inch diagonal (which makes it more convenient). Secondly, if gaming experience is important to you, pay attention to the same POCO F3 ( review , video review ). It has a much more productive filling and there are no such strict restrictions on the operating temperature. True, the camera F3 will not be as interesting as the Galaxy A72. Decide what's more important to you.
