Samsung Galaxy S10 Review

Brand Samsung

Samsung continues to increase its target audience by introducing smartphones in its lineup designed for different wallets, with a range of models that can compete with modern budget Chinese devices. Now there are A- and M-lines, which feature devices with decent cameras and good performance.

Everyone knows that for many years Samsung has been pleased with high-quality displays. In the middle class, this is AMOLED, and in the premium class, Dynamic AMOLED 2X is hard to find.
In its best lines, Samsung uses its own matrices.
Well, in addition to traditional solutions, this brand produces models with folding and flexible screens, shock-resistant devices, and models with styluses. Thus, the South Korean brand provides quality and innovation to each of the lines - from budget to premium.

Package

The company did not save on packaging - the black matte box looks expensive and elegant. If you want to choose a smartphone for a gift, it looks great even without a wrapper.

A stylish embossed logo adorns the front of the box, and the specifications of the smartphone are listed on the back of the box.

Equipment

Includes an envelope with instructions and a key for the SIM card slot. There are also headphones, a cable, a power supply, and an adapter.

It's nice that the manufacturer has added a fast charging unit and a Type-C-USB 2.0 adapter to the kit, which will not only allow you to transfer data from an old phone, but also help you read information from any flash drive.

Appearance

The S10 smartphone looks expensive and elegant. The premium version of the flagship of the past generation will still give odds to new models with its signature curved glass, a metal frame around the perimeter, and an iridescent back cover.

The phone is assembled with high quality, it is pleasant to hold in hand, and small dimensions contribute to the fact that it can be operated with one hand. Although it was a little unusual to pick it up after the huge A7.

Of the minuses - in addition to the power and volume keys, there is a key to turn on the proprietary Bixby assistant on the case. It is absolutely useless since Bixby in Russia still does not work and even another function cannot be tied to it.

The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S10+ are 157.6 × 74.1 × 7.8 mm. Weight - 175 grams, light and moderately compact - and the dimensions and weight are perfectly balanced.

Processor

The processor installed in this model: an eight-core 64-bit Exynos 9820. The processor of 2018, the Galaxy S10 became the first smartphone based on it. Its performance is high, comparable to Snapdragon 855. Consisting of 8 cores, it can save 10% more energy than Exynos 9810, and graphics performance has become 40% higher. The popular 2 + 2 + 4 scheme works like this: 2 customized 4th generation Mongoose M4 cores (2.73 GHz) for complex operations, 2 ARM Cortex-A75 cores (2.31 GHz) for medium complexity, plus 4 ARM Cortex-A55 cores (1.95 GHz) for simple tasks.

The Galaxy S10 has 8GB of RAM and it is good for daily work. The user interface, apps, and games work well.

A few words about memory - built-in size - 128 GB. In my opinion, both indicators are worthy.

Battery

The autonomy of a smartphone depends not only on the battery, but also on the energy efficiency, functionality, and technical parameters of the phone.
The battery capacity for the S10 has been increased to 3400 mAh.

As a rule, this is enough for use during the day, with a working screen for about 5 hours, open Internet, applications, watching videos. By the end of the day, the battery icon is lit red - 15 percent remains. The potential declared by the manufacturer is 18 hours of video playback, 81 hours of music listening.

The smartphone supports 12W fast charging, with fast charging, the phone is fully charged in an hour and a half.

Galaxy S10 can be charged by wire and branded induction stations. Although this is not surprising now, another feature is the possibility of reverse charging, that is, you can turn your smartphone into a wireless charger and share the charge with headphones or a watch.

Screen

For thin bezel lovers, the S10 is a must-have. Curved streamlined edges of the display look stylish and futuristic. It has such narrow bezels that the display takes up 88% of the usable area on the front of the phone.

The screen diagonal is 6.1”, which is not so small. The screen is protected by tempered glass Gorilla Glass 6. Gorilla Glass of the sixth generation has the ability to provide protection when dropped on a hard surface.

The smartphone has a Dynamic AMOLED matrix with a resolution of Wide QuadHD - 3040x1440 pixels. All image parameters - quality, brightness, and contrast on such a screen are higher, it determines a greater number of halftones.

In addition to scratch resistance, S10 has an oleophobic coating, which means that fingerprints hardly appear on it.

The screen has two main modes: Vivid Colors and Natural Colors. The first one is very rich, bright, and colorful, but you can adjust the color temperature on it to your personal preferences. The natural one looks dull, and against the background of the standard one, it turns yellow. But no matter which profile I choose, the S10's screen is still gorgeous, and has no complaints.

Camera

S10 has two cameras, front and rear (main).

The front camera has a 10-megapixel autofocus module with an aperture of F1.9 and an additional one (8 megapixels), which is used to collect information about the background to blur it in the future.

It is unusual that the selfie camera is not in the center, but is built into the screen in the form of a dot in the upper right corner, but you get used to it.

By the way, due to the fact that the camera is placed on the screen, the working area of the screen is significantly increased. On the front camera, the pictures are good even in insufficient artificial light conditions. 16 MP ultra-wide angle with 123º field of view;

wide-angle 12 MP Dual Pixel;

12 MP telephoto lens

The elements of the camera protrude from the body, I recommend carrying the device in a case — it will protect the lenses from damage.

Sound

One main speaker is echoed by the conversational one.

Stereo speakers: one, located on the top, directed down and to the right, the second, also spoken,
is located above the display and directed upwards. Together they are one of the best. The sound is loud, clear, and expressive, with good bass. And video, and music, and sounds in games - are reproduced by speakers with excellent quality.

This applies both to a wired connection (the AKG headphones that come with the kit are connected via a mini jack), and to a wireless connection.

Connection

To connect a SIM card, the Samsung Galaxy S10 has two nano-SIM slots, one of which is combined with a memory card slot. The S10 integrates a modem that can work with LTE category 20, with a download speed of up to 2 Gb / s, a transmission - of 150 Mb / s. The S10 is one of the fastest 4G smartphones out there.

The navigation module works with systems: GPS (including A-GPS), GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo. Perfectly copying, and quickly completing tasks.

Conclusion

Briefly pros:

  • powerful Exynos 9820 processor
  • high-quality photo and video shooting, a lot of goodies for creating really beautiful pictures
  • dust and moisture protection with the current mini-jack
  • 6.1" colorful AMOLED display
  • good autonomy
  • stylish futuristic design.

Minuses:

  • non-working and non-reconnectable button for Bixby
Yes, the Galaxy S10 has been in the Samsung lineup for quite some time, but it still remains in demand. Well, those who already use this device, I think, will confirm its impeccable work. The device is fast, with an ergonomic shape and modern design, protected from moisture and dust, with wireless and fast charging, cool photo and video equipment, high-quality sound, and wide connectivity.

Appearance and equipment

The Samsung Galaxy A72 ships with a USB-C to USB-C cable, 25W compact power adapter, SIM eject tool, and documentation. The manufacturer was not generous with the cover and other amenities, and the USB-C cable is, of course, very modern, but it may not be practical when connecting a smartphone to a PC.

The front surface is protected by fifth-generation Corning Gorilla Glass, the frame is made of glossy plastic, and the back is made of matte. In the Russian market, the smartphone is available in black, lavender and blue colors. I got lavender: it looks unusual, but calm. The photo block, as in the case of the Galaxy A52 ( review ), seems to be squeezed out in the lid. Despite the lack of premium materials, the device is officially certified according to the IP67 dust and moisture protection standard, which not everyone can boast of.

Multimedia and conversational speakers form a stereo pair. The sound quality, though not top-notch, is much more interesting than most mono solutions. The hybrid SIM tray is located on the top end. You can use either two nanoSIM cards, or one nanoSIM and one microSD memory card (up to 1 TB).

Samsung Galaxy A72 review: consumer shovel

The Galaxy A72 has a 6.7" Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1800 pixels and a refresh rate of 90Hz. The display is really big, overkill for many. There is always the danger of accidental clicks when reaching for the opposite side of the screen.

Samsung Galaxy A72 review: consumer shovel

The settings offer a range of tools for customizing displayed colors, display refresh rate, AoD, and more. What the settings don't offer is manual control of DC-dimming flicker reduction technology.

Software

The smartphone runs on Android 11 in One UI 3.1 shell. Most of the time the system is stable, but problems do happen. So, when unlocking the smartphone with a fingerprint, the animation stably slows down, and during the shooting, there was a crash from the “Camera” once. There is no big trouble from this, but the lack of advertising and a pleasant appearance are definitely pleasing.

Among the unique chips here is support for the Edge quick access panel, Samsung Pay (without imitation of a magnetic tape) and support for device security using the Knox hardware chip. The latter will be especially appreciated by active users of the “protected folder”.

cameras

The Galaxy A72 main camera unit includes four cameras: a 64-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 5-megapixel macro module. All cameras are working, they didn’t install completely stupid 2 megapixel plugs and other depth sensors.

The main camera slot is occupied by a Sony IMX682 sensor with a resolution of 64 (→16) MP, f/1.8 aperture and phase detection autofocus. We have already seen it in the same Galaxy M51 ( review ), and then it showed its good side. What is this time? This time it was flavored with optical stabilization!

In the standard mode, electronic algorithms and various improvers are fully worked out. The final photos bear the imprint of Samsung's corporate identity - sharp and saturated colors. As a result, the picture is not always realistic, but almost always bright and attractive.

Performance and Benchmarks

The heart of the device is the Snapdragon 720G chipset with the Adreno 618 graphics chip. In our case, it is echoed by 6 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128 GB of permanent UFS 2.1 format. If there had been a more productive solution, maybe electronic stabilization would have worked when shooting 4K @ 30fps, and there would have been no twitching in the interface.

Samsung Galaxy A72 review: consumer shovel

Launching demanding applications is best done through the Game Launcher. It works out optimization algorithms and other magic. The throttling test without the launcher and with the launcher showed similar graphs, but the difference in the average score was 10k (132 vs 142). In this path, it is interesting that the Samsung A52 in the same test showed a much more stable picture and gave an average result of as much as 187 thousand.

The exact answer to the question "Why so?" I don't, but I did find something. You can find analyzes of both smartphones on the network, and as it turned out, the A52 is equipped with a copper tube for heat dissipation (located under the battery), while the A72 is devoid of such a detail. Perhaps that's the point.

conclusions

Samsung Galaxy A72 is a good option for fans of the brand with a craving for large diagonals. For not the most modest ≈38,000 rubles, the smartphone offers a large (even unnecessarily for some) AMOLED display with increased hertz, nice appearance, good autonomy, stereo sound, dust and moisture protection and a smart set of cameras with optical stabilization. If these are the things you are interested in when buying a smartphone, click on the big red button below and do not know the troubles.

If not, I have a couple of ideas for you. First, take a look at the Samsung A52 ( review ). With a difference of almost a quarter of the price, it offers almost everything the same, minus the telephoto and a couple of tenths of an inch diagonal (which makes it more convenient). Secondly, if gaming experience is important to you, pay attention to the same POCO F3 ( review , video review ). It has a much more productive filling and there are no such strict restrictions on the operating temperature. True, the camera F3 will not be as interesting as the Galaxy A72. Decide what's more important to you.

Samsung Galaxy A50 Review

Samsung A50 looks decent: the big screen takes up most of the front panel (85.2%). The U-shaped cutout for the selfie camera looked normal in 2019. But it already seems old, the “leaky” screen of the 51st looks fresher and more relevant for 2021. The back surface and side frames are made of plastic. The nice colors and highlights look great in 2021 as well.

Dimensions and weight: 158.5 x 74.7 x 7.7 mm and 166 g respectively. The phone is light and thin. The next generation has grown in weight and thickness: 172 g and 7.9 mm. Also, everything is fine with the new one with weight distribution.

Good quality AMOLED screen: bright and juicy. The picture looks nice: 6.4″ with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 and 403 PPI. But the A51 is better: 6.5″, the resolution is almost the same, but the brightness has grown (636 nits versus 560). Thanks to the increased brightness and the hole for the camera, the A51 looks more modern and high-quality in terms of display. In both cases, the screens are covered by Gorilla Glass 3.

  • Processor from Samsung under the number 9610 - 8 cores with a frequency of up to 2.3 GHz.
  • Graphics — Mali G72 MP3.
  • RAM 4/6 GB.
  • Storage: 64 or 128 GB.
  • 4G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5 versions, NFC.

And the Samsung A51 is the same, but the processor is slightly improved: 9611 versus 9610. Well, you understand that the filling has not grown in a year.

Overall performanceProc is not very quick, there is jamming with a large number of minimized applications. But for games, the chip is well-optimized, and the situation is the same as with the A51. It turns out that all the available forces go to the games when you start them. And at other times, the chip is not, particularly in a hurry, but charging is always in place. Here, the Samsung people are great fellows, it’s not for nothing that they have been leaders for so many years.

The 4000 mAh battery holds a charge for a day and a half. Everything again depends only on you. It takes almost 2 hours to charge from a standard adapter, so choose accelerated charges (up to 15 W). Samsung just saved it on the package. By the way , the batteries for 50 and 51 are the same.

CamerasBehind them are 3: the main one at 25MP, the width at 8MP and the depth sensor at 5MP. And the Samsung Galaxy A50 shoots really well. Of course, everything is within the budget and age, but the photos and videos are very good. The A51 added a 4th module (5MP macro), and the base was increased to 48MP. The quality has grown, but not at times, but just got a little higher, but this is if you compare everything thoroughly. In ordinary life, you will hardly see the difference. Below: photo and video in daylight and at night.

Interesting fact: A50 does not allow switching from one camera to another during video recording. That is, the zoom for video is not available, immediately select the camera for shooting.

The sound is not very good. Very loud but flat. There is only one speaker and it is straining as it can, although it does not wheeze. There is a standard 3.5mm headphone jack and even AptX for good sound without wires. The middle peasant of the next generation has the same thing.

The fingerprint is located under the screen and works fine. Slower than the classic, the technology is still new. In more expensive and newer smarts, the screen print works better, but the budget is different there. In A51 it works exactly the same as in A50.

To make it work properly:

  1. clean finger.
  2. Clear screen.
  3. Multiple prints on one finger, because the grip is often different, and the sensor is still imperfect.

The vibration is buzzing and you won't like it. Nothing has changed in the next A51.

General convenience is at the level because this is Samsung and not some no-name. The Samsung Galaxy A50 fits the hand the way it should. It is thin, light, and fits in any pocket. Phone functions work perfectly: you can hear each other for 5 points. The firmware is convenient and does not cause any questions at all.

PricesYou can still find new devices, on the Ya. The market asks for them 15,500 rubles. Expensive. Here for a used one, they ask for normal 8-10 thousand rubles. But what about the A51? New ones are estimated from 17,000 rubles. Already better, right? And the used one costs a little more than the A50 - 10-13 thousand rubles. This is really beneficial.

By the way, here's a full review of the Samsung A51There we also figure out whether it is worth buying at all in 2021 and even compare it with a non-obvious model.

ConclusionThe Samsung Galaxy A50 is a good mid-range phone for its time (2019). But in 2021, it’s better to take the A51, because it’s a year younger, costs only a couple of thousand more and looks much more modern. It will be easier to sell the A51 later than the A50. Again, due to age. Make the right purchases.
